College Advisor
Based at ATEMS; also serves Woodson and Middle Schools

Reports To:  AEF Executive Director & Campus Principals Pay Grade:  Administrative Professional 1

Primary Purpose: This is a full-time professional staff position sponsored by the Abilene Education Foundation. The employee will be based at ATEMS High School/The LIFT, Woodson Center for Excellence, and One AISD Center to provide information, advice, and assistance that will help more high school students attend college. Special emphasis will be given on targeting students who are not intending to attend college or who are the first in their families to consider a college education. The objective of this program, known as the AEF COOL (College Offers Opportunities for Life) Program, is to have more high school students enroll in college after high school.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of college admissions process and FAFSA is highly recommended
  • Experience: Experience with youth is preferred

Performance Responsibilities and Duties:
College Advising:

  1. Assist students in reviewing all possible choices for post-secondary education.
  2. Develop methods to identify students not considering post-secondary education and provide information to students and their parents.
  3. Provide information and assistance in the identification and completion of appropriate placement tests, admission applications, registration processes and orientation activities.
  4. Compile and study educational and economic information to aid students in carrying out educational goals.
  5. Coordinate financial advice to students and parents and assist in the completion of financial aid applications, including the FAFSA.
  6. Collect, organize, and analyze information about students through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise student’s interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics for post-secondary educational opportunities.
  7. Act as an institutional liaison with high school and college/vocational counselors and parents.
  8. Make presentations to student groups to emphasize and publicize the advisement activities of the AEF COOL Program.
  9. Coordinate and attend college tours with students who are participating in the program (2-3 overnight trips each year).
  10. Attend professional development conferences to gain new ideas and insights and stay abreast with new educational legislation.
  11. Provide follow-up activities and data to evaluate program efforts with regard to the placement rates of the students in higher education and student achievement in college.

Community and Underclassman Outreach: 

  1. Oversee COOL PREP (Promoting Readiness and Educational Potential) Program at Middle Schools (weekly meetings with 8th grade cohorts)
  2. Develop and provide presentations and interactive career and college path classroom projects to high school underclassmen and elementary and middle school in collaboration with program coordinator.
  3. Co-conduct senior and underclassman initiatives during the summer.
  4. Host FAFSA workshops at ATEMS and other high schools as needed. 
  5. Present and participate in community partner events that encourage post-secondary education, including after-hours events as required.
  6. Attend and assist with other community events as needed.
  7. Assist with the annual AEF-AISD College Fair with Abilene High, ATEMS, WCE, and Cooper high counselors as well as other AEF College Advisors.
